Review & Description

"Winters in Shanghai" is the exciting story of a former World War I RAF pilot who learns to prosper in the corrupt and dangerous city of Shanghai in 1927. Jake Winters, an American, is present at many of the most brutal moments in modern Chinese history. This novel takes you, page by page, through Jake's life. It begins on the day Chiang Kai Shek attempts to exterminate all the Communists in Shanghai and ends with the Japanese invasion. Shanghai is the headquarters of Jake's arms distribution company and it is there he makes the political compromises which go against his upbringing . He is witness to atrocities that manage to shock a Great War veteran. Anything goes as Jake's world is changed overnight by an incident in Manchuria the Japanese use as an excuse to annex China. He falls in love with a beautiful Chinese woman, Hong Lin and watches as the seeds are planted for WWII. In these pages you will meet Nationalist and Communist Generals, as well as common Chinese who are simply trying to survive in a dangerous moment in time.

Jake Winters lives in a culture far removed from his native Iowa. In a society where the British and French encourage opium sales, you see colonialism at its most horrid. Shanghai has its excitement, but the Kuomintang (Nationalist) government is kept in power by a ruthless gang, which targets and his business. Jake finds the limitations of an upbringing in a "guilt" society on his survival in a "shame" society.
