Bloodletting (Kindle Edition)

Bloodletting
Bloodletting (Kindle Edition)
By Michael McBride

Review & Description

The butchered remains of twelve year-old Jasmine Rivers are discovered in the cellar of an abandoned farmhouse on the desolate eastern plains of Colorado, the fourth mutilated body found in the last two months. The FBI is still searching for the missing parts of the previous three.

Hundreds of miles away in Arizona, eleven corpses are exhumed from the Sonoran Desert. They’ve been mummified and bundled in the traditional Inca style. But the Inca lived in South America, and these bodies aren’t centuries old.

Seemingly unrelated victims that share a common cause of death: exsanguination.

Special Agent Paxton Carver follows the trail of blood, which leads him to the continuation of genetic experimentation that began during World War II and a designer retrovirus capable of altering human chromosomes. Can he track down the virus and prevent further exposure before the real bloodletting begins? The butchered remains of twelve year-old Jasmine Rivers are discovered in the cellar of an abandoned farmhouse on the desolate eastern plains of Colorado, the fourth mutilated body found in the last two months. Review & Description

Several years after a bitter retirement from the Air Force, former fighter pilot Colin Pearce has found a second career: flying Gulfstream and Falcon business jets as a daily contractor. Between the constant travel and his extensive Single-Malt Scotch collection, he manages to keep the demons of has past where they belong. It's a lucrative, solitary existence and that's the way he likes it. But then he takes a phone call while making a connection in the Atlanta airport and his life changes forever. The call leads Pearce to a dark corner of a nearby hotel bar, where he finds himself across a table from two CIA operations officers - one of whom looks oddly familiar. Over the last year, they've been following the activities of a mercenary F-16 unit which has been conducting bombing raids all over the world. Now, thanks to an informant on the inside, they have solid intelligence on an upcoming strike that could have devastating global consequences. But their informant has gone silent and they need Pearce's help. Pearce flatly refuses and tells them, "...where all this service to country shit is concerned, my 'give-a-damn' has been flat out busted." Then, they tell Pearce the one thing he wasn't prepared to hear. Their informant was Burt Magnusson, Pearce's Air Force Academy roommate and close friend. Before he went missing, Magnusson added Pearce's name to the unit's "talent pool" of possible replacements. Now the unit needs a new pilot and the CIA needs someone to stop them. Colin Pearce, a former F-16 instructor with no family ties, seems to be the perfect candidate. But that's not the only reason the CIA wants him. They also know enough about Pearce's dark side to be confident he'll do what must be done. Reluctantly, Pearce goes in and immediately finds himself in a desperate race against time as he frantically tries to thwart the unit's destructive intentions as the day of the fateful strike rapidly approaches. In the midst of this struggle, Pearce must cope with the competing romantic attentions of the unit's seductive commander and its voluptuous flight doctor, while simultaneously trying to evade an anonymous assassin who seems intent that Pearce doesn't leave the island alive. Pearce has lived his life by a single creed: "I'd rather be lucky than good." With lottery-like odds against his survival, he's going to have to be very lucky indeed. Read more

The Brevity of Life Part I: Down From The Mountain (Kindle Edition)

The Brevity of Life Part I: Down From The Mountain
The Brevity of Life Part I: Down From The Mountain (Kindle Edition)
By Michael Lavergne

Review & Description

A Serial Novel: Part 1 of 8

'The Brevity of Life' is a fast paced political thriller which paints a lush and vivid portrayal of modern day Thailand and Burma.

Peter Dunn is a middle aged reporter for the Times who has become bitter after the repeal of his Pulitzer Prize. Floundering in New York, he is offered a last chance opportunity to return to Asia.

The journey back coincides with New Year celebrations for much of South-East Asia and the world soon learns that the 'Free Burmese Union' has chosen this time to launch a surprise uprising against the country's military junta.

Rebels seize the properties of multinational companies invested there while the Burmese born former head of the U.N. leads last ditch peace negotiations in an effort to head off more violence. But with the corporations standing to lose billions of dollars, a dark plan is set into motion to hand Burma back to its military masters.

Peter heads into Burma to cover the story as it breaks. Along the way he falls in with Zau Tu, the charismatic leader of an ethnic Kachin rebel faction and together they uncover the sinister plot.

To redeem himself for past sins Peter must make a starkly painful choice between those he holds most dear and the fate of the country which threatens to slip back into brutal repression.A Serial Novel: Part 1 of 8

Danny Boy Stories -- Black til Daylight
Danny Boy Stories -- Black til Daylight (Kindle Edition)
By D C Dan Lee

Review & Description

Shot, severely injured, there is only one way for a Cop to survive the dark quarry.
Set in 1960, “Black ‘til Daylight” is another short story for busy people, this time tracing an horrendous New Year’s Eve night for a police officer, his friends, and colleagues. Wounded by an assailant’s bullet, thrown from his crashing patrol car, the officer works to survive.
In 1960 there were no cellular telephones, no tiny hand-held radios, only the strength of conviction, one’s wits, and, maybe, a two-way patrol car radio to help in a terrifying black night that seems to never end.
“Black ‘til Daylight” is another Danny Boy Stories ebook short story.

Across The Fence (Kindle Edition)

Across The Fence
Across The Fence (Kindle Edition)
By John Stryker Meyer

Review & Description

For eight years, far beyond the battlefields of Vietnam and the glare of media distortions, American Green Berets fought a deadly secret war in Laos and Cambodia under the aegis of the top secret Military Assistance Command Vietnam – Studies and Observations Group, or SOG.

Go deep into the jungle with five SOG warriors surrounded by 10,000 enemy troops as they stack up the dead to build a human buttress for protection. Witness a Green Beret, shot in the back four times and left for dead, who survives to fight savagely against incredible odds to complete his missions.

Shudder as an enemy soldier touches a Green Beret’s boot in the dark of night. Cringe as a Sergeant on SOG Spike Team Louisiana calls in an air strike on his team to break an enemy’s wave attack. A team member dies instantly, and a Green Beret has an out-of-body experience as he watches his leg get blown off.

“As the commander of SOG, I can say that “Across the Fence” accurately reflects why the secret war was hazardous for our troops and so deadly for the enemy.
– Major General John K. Singlaub (U. S. Army Ret.)

Black Ops told with the terrifying clarity that only one who was there can tell it.
– W.E.B. Griffin & William E. Butterworth IV

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (DVD)

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (DVD)
By Johnny Depp

Product Images

Review & Description

Can anything keep Captain Jack Sparrow down? Well, as long as Johnny Depp plays the offbeat pirate of the high seas, as he does in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the answer is "Not bloody likely, mate!" This fourth installment of the Pirates franchise is jolly good fun--nearly as good as the first one, in fact. The writing is crisp, the action amazing--and there's the addition of a foe finally the match of Captain Jack: Ian McShane as the dreaded, and dreadful, Blackbeard. McShane seems to be having as much fun as Depp, and that's saying something--channeling his dastardly character on Deadwood but keeping his epithets rated PG-13. Adding to the festivities is the winsome Penélope Cruz, as Angelica, a woman with a past entwined with Jack Sparrow's. Angelica now might be a fearsome pirate herself--or maybe just a cunning con artist tugging at Sparrow's heartstrings.

The action in On Stranger Tides centers on the quest to find the legendary Fountain of Youth in the Americas. But the plot, of course, is incidental in the Pirates films. From the earliest scenes, it's clear the action, and Depp's winking at the camera, are the stars. Captain Jack stages a giant food fight in front of the King of England, culminating in a chandelier scene worthy of The Phantom of the Opera, and he's off at a gallop. Along for the ride are previous cast members Geoffrey Rush (who's sold out and is now an unctuous representative of His Majesty's Navy); loyal sidekick Kevin McNally, who narrowly escapes a death sentence, and then celebrates by leaping on board Captain Jack's fraught mission; and Keith Richards as Jacky's dad, who speaks few words, but wise ones. There are even zombie pirates, and a mysterious mermaid. Pirates of the Caribbean isn't suitable for viewers under 8 or so, because it's dark and intense in spots, but otherwise, it's a rollicking good popcorn film. --A.T. Hurley Read more

Review & Description

It's Not Just an Action-Thriller, LIE MERCHANTS is a Warning!

LIE MERCHANTS is an electrifying action-thriller set in Highlands Ranch, Colorado. After reading LIE MERCHANTS, you will never look at the world the same way again. LIE MERCHANTS will turbo-charge your e-reading experience, compelling you to turn the pages as fast as you can to the surprise ending that guaranteed you will NOT guess!

In LIE MERCHANTS, real estate executive Tom Worth is shoved off his executive perch and thrust into a fringe world of extremists, finding himself at the epicenter of a plot to strike America's heartland. Only Tom, FBI agent Susan Black and the Centennial State Volunteers stand against America's enemies, both foreign and domestic.

The LIE MERCHANTS storyline takes the reader on a roller-coaster ride from Castle Pines, to Colorado Springs, Denver, Taos, Afghanistan, Dubai, Washington DC, Mazatlan and Zurich.

BE PREPARED, this book grabs you from the first chapter and then never lets you go, confronting the reader with controversy from the start. If you can handle the action, you WILL be entertained.

WARNING:

I wrote this warning about LIE MERCHANTS after speaking with several people who I trust. I want to give this warning before you buy the book, as truth in advertising.

First, based on some of my blog posts (jviser.blogspot.com) about true patriotism and the pursuit of Happiness, some spiritually-inclined folks looking for a feel-good novel might be misled. Make no mistake, LIE MERCHANTS contains some very ugly scenes. It is about war and with that comes violence, death and terror. Not everyone likes to read about those things, especially during an age of so much conflict. But, that is the reality of our world today and I wanted to write about how higher values can live and breathe even in a world at war. Spiritually-inclined readers might be turned off by the guns and blood, but they ignore reality at a price. If you don't believe that America has real enemies who are working right now to attack us, then you might not appreciate this book. In fact, reading about what could happen when evil walks up to your front door with an AK-47 might unsettle you. Especially if you knew that your consumption helped finance it.

Second, some of the reviews LIE MERCHANTS has received compared my work to Vince Flynn, Brad Thor, Tom Clancy and other best-selling authors. I am flattered, but I am not them, not even close. Those guys are great writers and although I enjoy reading their books, I am not as skilled as they are. At least not yet. My writing has a very personal mission, and it compels me to complete the intended trilogy. It is true that in LIE MERCHANTS a lot of terrorists die in very interesting ways and I include descriptions of military hardware and what it does, but that's not the core message of the story. If all you want is a one-sided version of our nation's situation and don't believe that appearances are deceiving, then don't buy this book. It might challenge your notion of who is a "bad" guy and piss you off. So, spare yourself the angst and don't buy it.

Now that I got that all off my chest, I admit that I may have alienated two big target markets of spiritual readers and self-described patriots. Consequently, I might not become independently wealthy from the sales of LIE MERCHANTS. That's okay, I have a day job and I like it, and I get acceptance and approval from places other than my writing.

However, if you can deal with some discomfort and push through the parts of the book that might challenge your current sensibilities, then you might not only be entertained, but you might look at America a little differently tomorrow. Well, that's my hope.

I am always interested in what my readers have to say, because I write for you. So, please do not hesitate to send me an email at jviserbooks@gmail.com.

A young woman is dead, and solid evidence points to a soldier at a nearby military base. But that soldier has powerful friends in Washington.

Reacher is ordered undercoverto find out everything he can, to control the local police, and then to vanish. Reacher is a good soldier. But when he gets to Carter Crossing, he finds layers no one saw coming, and the investigation spins out of control.

Local sheriff Elizabeth Deveraux has a thirst for justiceand an appetite for secrets. Uncertain they can trust one another, Reacher and Deveraux reluctantly join forces. Opulence Among Us (Kindle Edition)

Opulence Among Us
Opulence Among Us (Kindle Edition)
By Gary D. Henry

Review & Description

This is a story about an amazing group of friends that set out to change the world one person at a time. They were all extremely wealthy through hard work or inheritance. They all figure that they can only drive one car at a time and live in one house at a time and everything else is really not needed. The ten friends set out to change thousands of people’s lives in this country. They would pick a downtrodden neighborhood and breathe life into it by paving the streets, fixing all existing homes, giving the people good paying jobs and paying off all their outstanding debt. These poor people who could barely feed their kids would now have a place they were proud to call home.
They paid their taxes and lived their lives. The friends branched out to adjoining communities and were met with the same love and admiration that they enjoyed enhancing lives in the first neighborhood. The group would branch out and soon they have renovated nearly an entire county until corrupt politicians and drug lords attempt to put a stop to these good deeds because it was removing the slums that these entities rely on to do business.

Legacy of the Unsung (Kindle Edition)

Review & Description

"This is a story about Joseph Patrick. As boy he was disliked for a very good reason. He was a classic bully who stole and cheated his way through school and was destined to do the same into adulthood. He didn’t have to be that way because he was a genius but chose to be the way he was His mother and Uncle Joe tried to keep him on the right path but there was no stopping young Joe. He lied, cheated and stole his way into a CEO position and quickly became a very rich man.
Wealth was all that he needed. He always viewed his friends as people who just wanted his money and that was it. His mother always bragged about Joe’s ancestry and what great men they were. Joe was living in the Internet age and he looked them all up but they were no where to be found and thought that if they did such great things then they should be mentioned, but they weren’t. Joe’s father was a great man. He and his brother, Joe Mclain, went to war but only Joe came back.
Many thought that young Joe acted the way he did because he grew up without a father. His father died the day he was born and Joe vowed to look after young Joe and his mother for the rest of his life. Uncle Joe took young Joe camping all the time and he told him stories of a red door to the past that appeared to show people the right path in life. Joe was on a collision course with the mystical red door and five lifetimes of adventures were in his immediate future culminating with an ending that will both shock and endear him to what’s important in life.

Review & Description

“A well-crafted page-turner that addresses the most important issue of our time. It will keep you reading well into the night.”–Vince Flynn

A New York Times reporter has drawn upon his experience covering the occupation in Iraq to write the most gripping and chillingly plausible thriller of the post-9/11 era. Alex Berenson’s debut novel of suspense, The Faithful Spy, is a sharp, explosive story that takes readers inside the war on terror as fiction has never done before.

John Wells is the only American CIA agent ever to penetrate al Qaeda. Since before the attacks in 2001, Wells has been hiding in the mountains of Pakistan, biding his time, building his cover.
Now, on the orders of Omar Khadri–the malicious mastermind plotting more al Qaeda strikes on America–Wells is coming home. Neither Khadri nor Jennifer Exley, Wells’s superior at Langley, knows quite what to expect.

For Wells has changed during his years in the mountains. He has become a Muslim. He finds the United States decadent and shallow. Yet he hates al Qaeda and the way it uses Islam to justify its murderous assaults on innocents. He is a man alone, and the CIA–still reeling from its failure to predict 9/11 or find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq–does not know whether to trust him. Among his handlers at Langley, only Exley believes in him, and even she sometimes wonders. And so the agency freezes Wells out, preferring to rely on high-tech means for gathering intelligence.

But as that strategy fails and Khadri moves closer to unleashing the most devastating terrorist attack in history, Wells and Exley must somehow find a way to stop him, with or without the government’s consent.

From secret American military bases where suspects are held and “interrogated” to basement laboratories where al Qaeda’s scientists grow the deadliest of biological weapons, The Faithful Spy is a riveting and cautionary tale, as affecting in its personal stories as it is sophisticated in its political details. The first spy thriller to grapple squarely with the complexities and terrors of today’s world, this is a uniquely exciting and unnerving novel by an author who truly knows his territory.

AMBUSH VALLEY
I Corps, Vietnam, 1967—
the Story of a Marine Infantry Battalion's Battle for Survival

Eric Hammel

In the summer of 1967, the Marines in I Corps, South Vietnam’s northernmost military region, were doing eveything they could to lighten the pressure on the besieged Con Thien Combat Base.

Still fresh after months of relatively light action around Khe Sanh, the 3d Battalion, 26th Marines, was sent to the Con Thien region to secure the combat bases’s endangered main supply route. On September 7, 1967, its first full day in the new area of operations, separate elements of the battalion were attacked by at least two battalions of North Vietnamese infantry, and both were nearly overrun in night-long battles.

On September 10, while advancing to a new sector near Con Thien, the 3d Battalion, 26th Marines, was attacked by at least a full North Vietnamese regiment, the same NVA unit that had attacked it two days earlier. Isolated into two separate defensive perimeters, the Marines battled through the afternoon and evening against repeated assaults by waves of NVA regulars intent upon achieving a major victory. In a battle described as “Custer’s Last Stand—With Air Support,” the Americans prevailed by the narrowest of margins.

Ambush Valley is an unforgettable account of bravery and survival under impossible conditions. It is told entirely in the words of the men who faced the ordeal together—an unprecedented mosaic of action and emotion woven into an incredibly clear and vivid combat narrative by one of today’s most effective military historians. Ambush Valley achieves a new standard for oral history. It a war story not to be missed.

PRAISE FOR AMBUSH VALLEY

“Ambush Valley recounts the heroic performance in the summer of 1967 of the 3d Battalion, 26th Marines . . . as it defended the U.S. combat base on a hill called Con Thien. . . . [It] is a fresh, highly personalized, and vivid narrative focusing on one “theater” of the Vietnam War from the perspective of those who fought there.” ——Sea Power

“Another of Hammels harrowing eyewitness accounts of a Vietnam War campaign that remains a puzzling episode in a bitterly debated conflict. . . . [The] firsthand recollections afford a vivid, inspiring record of bloody set-piece battles . . . ” —–Kirkus Reviews

“This harrowing action is told almost entirely in the words of the survivors in a style that resembles the script for a documentary. By switching back and forth between voices Hammel is able to reinforce or expand on moments in the action; the device elevates this oral history of small unit action over most of its kind.” —— Library Journal

“The desperate defensive tactics as well as the raw emotions of the men are vividly conveyed in this memorable mosaic of concentrated warfare. Superb oral history." ——Publishers Weekly

“Hammel has expertly woven recollections of numerous participants into a concise yet vivid tale of survival. I marvelled at his ability to present a complete account without gaps or reliance on extended narration. . . . I became so involved I did not want to put it down. ——Marine Corps Gazette

“The narrative is hard and gritty—from the gut.” ——Friday Review of Defense Literature
