Originally published in 1864 as Voyage au centre de la Terre, there are two principal English translations. The most commonly reprinted translation, published by Griffith and Farran in 1871, changed the names of some of the characters, and added and deleted passages ad lib.
Verne looms large in the literature of the hollow earth, not only because of his fame, but because the book is so well written, and, despite some creaky science, is not a complete departure from reality, compared with Etidorpha, or even the Pellucidar books of Egdar Rice Burroughs.

As an enormous alien armada nears the vicinity of the moon, an anxious military commander, Commander Wesley Boughman waits for them knowing they are outnumbered. With time running out for Laura and the rest of the world, Jess wonders if they can destroy the towers and stop the storm so the military can fight a ground war while a space war is being conducted. Just as he thinks they might have a chance, the aliens launch an attack from space and destroy one of the armies that has been sent to rescue them. The aliens use micro-robots to their advantage. Can the military and human guerrillas defeat the aliens before it is too late? "Yeah. Sounds good. I've already talked to C.J. He's closing his shop a
little early. Has to go pick up some beer and pretzels."
"Sounds like a plan. See ya tomorrow."

And so it went. In four disparate cities spanning the country, plans that were sealed in the memories of 3 and 4 man groups were about to be deployed. Though separated by miles, they were all of the same mindset. The
country appeared to them as a revisited Rome as it was crumbling to its
knees in the fourth century. The decadence of the rich and the corruption of the system were rampant. The glory days were over. They and the majority of the population had been betrayed. The currency should never have been taken off the gold standard. Inflation was a hidden tax that was eating the sinew of the nation from the inside. Cronyism was rampant. All the money was headed in one direction, to the wealthiest. Whether misguided or not, whether extreme or not, this band of few was a proxy for many and they knew it. As each had done before, they were hell bent on showing their version of patriotism, again. The societies on the earth have aged poorly. Greed, complacency and laziness have supplanted a once eager spirit A few have tried to change this death spiral. This is their story.
